Description:
• ON A ROLL DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING (60 minutes)
Greg Smith and his family bare all in this "highly worthwhile and
inspiring" (The New York Times) portrait of a 65-pound African American
man striving for the American Dream. Fueled by discrimination, Smith
created On A Roll Talk Radio from his power wheelchair in 1992. The
father of three travels the globe in a new civil rights movement, but
finds his own nation's capital inaccessible - a minor challenge
compared to living independently and having safe relationships with
"facilitated" sex.
"Excellent!" - Anti-Defamation League
"Compelling, to say the least" - American Public Television
"Will strengthen all viewers" - National Organization on Disability
"Delves into areas rarely visited by mainstream media...a warts-and-all
story of struggle and boundless optimism" - St. Petersburg Times
• KEYNOTE MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND FILM SUBJECT GREG SMITH (30-45
minutes)
Greg Smith is recognized one of the most dynamic voices in the
disability movement today. A 2002 inductee into the esteemed National
Speakers Association, Smith has dedicated his career to increasing
disability awareness through the media and public speaking. His work
has resulted in significant national media exposure, including profile
on “CBS The Early Show” and National Public Radio’s “All Things
Considered,” plus articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times,
Chicago Tribune and Essence Magazine, as well as dozens of other major
market newspaper and television coverage.
• FILMMAKER Q & A, PLUS GUIDED PANEL DISCUSSION (30 minutes)
Independent filmmaker Joanne Caputo, MEQ, BS, sensitively guides a
follow-up discussion or concurrent session with students (and their
often highly emotional reactions), identifying the core diversity
awareness issues the film addresses for 54 million Americans with
disabilities. After fielding reactions, Caputo joins your students and
faculty with disabilities in a personalized panel discussion with your
campus audience. Suitable for undergraduates through doctoral
candidates.
Joanne Caputo's ON A ROLL follows her 1994 children's video, BALLERINA,
BALLERINA, recommended by Sesame St. Magazine and others. A magna cum
laude graduate, Caputo was a classroom teacher before working in
television production for the last twenty years. She has several social
consciousness films in development and is the author of two non-fiction
book manuscripts about enslaved African American mother, Margaret
Garner.

PRESENTATION RESULTS:
"This event was truly one of the most moving and inspiring experiences
I've had in my 16 years at the university. I've been teaching about
"diversity" topics for many years, and this film demonstrates, in a
uniquely compelling way, how race, gender, disability, and class issues
interact. Every university student, faculty and staff member must see
this film!"
Kelli Zaytoun, Ph.D
Director, Women's Studies
Assistant Professor, English
Wright State University
"In my view, "On A Roll" provides for a superb educational experience.
I am the chair of the American Sociological Society's annual
meeting...and I will inform its 7000 attendees about its usefulness in
classrooms."
Steven Dandaneau, Ph.D.
Director, University Honors Program
University of Dayton
"In my opinion, this film needs to be seen on every college campus.
There seems to be a wider range of students now able to go to college
and this has begun to broaden our vision that the world, indeed, needs
all kinds of minds/bodies/personalities to thrive..."
Erin Salva, Director
Disability Services
Kenyon College
"Overwhelmingly well received by those who attended. I would encourage
college students to see this film...a clear and concise view of how far
we've come, but how far we have yet to go."
Jon Purple, Ph.D.
Student Life Office
Cedarville University
"The video and speakers were honest and open and helped me understand
the issues of disability more fully" "More useful than literature
review" "I appreciated the open discussion related to sexuality"
"Immensely helpful" "The movie touched me deeply" "Awesome"
