Working from her Michigan home,
Bethany Broadwell spends hours on the Web most days, completing projects that range from writing
stories for local newspapers to developing and distributing online newsletters to hundreds of
subscribers. The interesting part is that her hands never touch the computer keyboard. Since
Broadwell has a form of muscular dystrophy called spinal muscular atrophy and weighs a petite 40
pounds, her physical strength is limited and she uses a wheelchair for mobility. To type, she
strictly uses a mouse and the onscreen keyboard that comes with Windows XP.
For years, Broadwell worked as a content
producer for iCan!, an online community for people with disabilities. Serving in this position,
she met Greg Smith. Although the two have never met in person, they became friends and Smith
now employs Broadwell to manage his Web content and various writing projects. They communicate
regularly using instant messaging.
Broadwell is a "Gusto Gal" when it comes
to "computering." She blogs, researches on the Net, designs Web sites, produces online content
and loves hearing the words, "You've got mail!"
